MAKUZU MIYAGAWA KOUSAI

The Makuzu ware brand has been loved by masters of the tea ceremony and educated people since the Edo Period.

Founder Miyagawa Kohei Masakazu operated a kiln in front of the gate of Chion-in Temple in Kyoto in the Jokyo Period (1684 – 1688), and a fifth-generation family member called Jihei gave himself the name of Miyagawa Kousai I. The current head of this tea ceremony china goods manufacturer is the sixth generation of his family. Makuzu ware is characterized by a straw-ash glaze produced using a technique that has been passed down since the Edo Period, as well as precise formation and delicate decoration techniques. These works were highly praised overseas in the Meiji Period. Many works by family descendant Miyagawa Kouzan of Yokohama are included in the collections of the British Museum and the Boston Museum.

This Makuzu ware incense case is characterized by its pale colour due to the straw-ash glaze,
as well as its thin structure. The inside is decorated with gold waves on a green background.

A rough design is carefully drawn inside the tea bowl. Incense cases are formed using the traditional method of pressing clay into a pattern. The traditional expertise shown by the renowned ancestors of the Miyagawa family has been maintained.
